How Niching Can Change Everything

Here’s a little-known fact about me—I am fascinated by tattoos. I have not a single one but tattoos are the entire reason I know what Instagram is!

So I joined the mailing list of a tattoo artist whose style I love to find out when her very hard to get appointments are available (a girl can dream😊). And this beauty about the benefits of niching popped into my inbox.

Most people are scared of niching down, narrowing their focus, doing only what they love, stopping the need to please everyone, and turning down requests they don’t want to take.

They worry that this will mean fewer people will like what they do, that they will lose followers, and that they will have fewer clients.

I was really scared of this too.

I was doing pretty well, drawing beautiful realistic portraits of animals, lovely mandalas, and flowers.

People loved them and asked for more.

So when I started noticing that my intuition was pulling me in the direction of more abstract, expressive line art,

I questioned myself a lot 😣

But here’s the good news: the complete opposite happened!!! 🥳

The moment I decided that this is what I want to do now, that this is my new style, that this is what I love and want to develop further, everything changed.

That same year, my Instagram following multiplied by seven, and I went from 6.5k followers to 45k. 🤯

I created a variety of flash designs that are still some of my favorites to this day—designs that I sell as prints and that became the classics of the Jio style.

In the following two years, I doubled my prices, started having clients fly in from other countries to get tattooed by me, and received invitations from prestigious studios all over the world.

The best thing?

I LOVED what I was doing! 🥰

This is when something really clicked for me. I wasn’t just drawing beautiful designs anymore; I was on a mission.

I had a purpose:

To touch people with my art.

To make a difference through my emotionally captivating designs.

So, if you’ve been more focused on pleasing others than following your own truth,

I hope this will activate something in you 🔥

Niching doesn’t mean you are limiting yourself. It can open doors to opportunities, growth, and a deeper connection with those who truly appreciate your work.

The other direct benefit of niching -- the obvious onramp it provides to creating your own original intellectual property assets. Instead of using that generic template assessment you found online, create an assessment that is specific to your niche based on your experience.
