The Assets Roadshow

The Antiques Roadshow was a favorite of my mother’s but I have not watched it since she went to the great récamier in the sky. 🥲 So I was pleasantly surprised when the show made a rare appearance in my news feed—the appraisal of a letter written by Frank Sinatra almost made the surprised owner faint.

If you have followed me for a while, you know that the Antiques Roadshow inspired me to ask my audience, “Is There a Rembrandt In Your Attic?”  For our expertise-based businesses, this question is the business version of a treasure hunt where we look for unidentified or undervalued assets that are hiding in plain sight.

My friend Michelle Calcagni provided an excellent example of a Rembrandt in her recent LinkedIn post about insights.  Did you know that your data-backed insights are a valuable asset?  Insights are especially valuable when you have a deep narrow niche (yet another reason to niche!).

What about your community? No doubt you understand the value of your community to your business, but have you thought about its value to others? Giving your clients access to each other makes you a master connector and leader. And if your community is hard to reach or slow to trust, like the leadership team of AI-powered startups or single parents of non-verbal autistic children, complementary businesses will be eager to partner with you.

Among my favorites Rembrandts are assets that have been used for internal purposes only.  These are often ripe for monetization with one or more IP-based leverage strategies, such as licensing.

Examine your business for these assets.  Might you have a Rembrandt in your attic?
