Best Practices for Using AI in Your Expertise-Based Business

Love it or hate it (love it) – AI provides valuable leverage in your business when you let it do some of the non-expert work for you.

That said, AI introduces legal and ethical issues that must be navigated to ensure safe and profitable scaling. Here are a few best practices shared by fellow IP attorney (and law school classmate) Joy Butler on my latest episode of Hourly to Exit. For the full episode, listen here.

Complement, Don’t Replace

AI should augment your skills, not replace them. Use AI to handle repetitive tasks, generate ideas, and streamline workflows. However, rely on your expertise to polish and perfect the final output. Make sure your unique point of view remains the voice of your brand.

Protect Confidentiality

Do not feed any confidential or proprietary information directly into AI tools. Instead, anonymize data to maintain privacy and safeguard sensitive information. For instance, if you are using a contract review tool, remove the names of the parties before deploying the tool.

Verify AI Output

AI can generate impressive content, but hallucinations, both fantastic and ordinary, are β€œreal”. Always review and verify AI-generated content for accuracy and relevance. Treat AI outputs as drafts that require your expert input.

Understand Copyright Issues

AI-generated content is at best not eligible for copyright protection and at worst copyright infringement. It's essential to be aware of the legal implications, especially if the content is used publicly or shared with clients.

Customize AI Tools

To get the most out of AI, tailor the tools to your specific business needs. Train AI systems to understand your context, tone, and style. Customization improves the relevance and accuracy of AI outputs, making them more aligned with your brand and client expectations. Check out my custom AI Assistant here!

Stay Informed

The legal and ethical issues are evolving rapidly. Staying informed enables you to leverage new capabilities and get ahead of any emerging concerns.

Fear not! By following a few common-sense best practices, you can safely and profitably integrate AI into your business, increasing your productivity without sacrificing the quality and integrity your clients expect.
